Don’t lose data, make a backup!

31 March 2021

PCs, smartphones, tablets, notebooks. In the digital age, we have many data storage devices around us. Some we use privately, others we need for work. All these devices are filled with important documents, interesting articles, and precious memories (photos and videos).

Let this be a reminder to back up massively today

Although you might expect that everyone handles data carefully, that’s often not the case. Simply saving a document or photo isn’t enough. Do you ever make a backup? If not, you’re not alone. Over 30% of people don’t do this. They simply don’t see the necessity or the risk. For private matters, it’s mainly a shame to lose cherished memories, but for a business, it can actually cause a lot of work or damage. You can lose a phone in an instant, and 1 in 10 computers get infected by a virus. Accidents happen easily, just like the notorious red cross or the eternally spinning beach ball (loading icon). About 29% of data loss results from an unfortunate click or not saving correctly.

So back up! That’s exactly why World Backup Day was created. Let this be a reminder to back up massively today.

How do you make a backup?

You can back up your data in different ways. To start, with an external hard drive. This is often a better and more affordable option than a USB stick. Just make sure the drive doesn’t get damaged—or lost, of course. You can also save your documents on the local drive. The problem with this method is that you’re still storing it on the same data carrier. If it breaks, you lose your documents, including the backup. In other words: you’re not protected against all risks.

The third option is an online backup — saving your data in the cloud. The cloud is an online space where you can log in from any device, anywhere in the world. It has many advantages: unlimited storage, access whenever and wherever you want, and use on multiple devices at the same time. But many people are wary of the cloud because it can be a relatively easy target for hackers trying to access important data. Therefore, it’s essential to protect your cloud storage well against hackers and other unwelcome guests. For more on online data security, read our blog: “Together for a better internet.”
