Sometimes a partnership demonstrates that IT is about much more than just hardware. Our partnership with the WerkgeversServicepunt (WSP) is a fine example of this. WSP brings together supply and demand in the labour market and works every day to create a society in which everyone can participate. This includes, in particular, people who need extra support in finding work.
A few years ago, a challenge arose that went unnoticed by many people. Jobseekers on minimum income were often reliant on public computers for their job applications, training courses and administrative tasks. When access to these facilities was temporarily restricted, it became clear just how vulnerable that situation actually was.
For many people, a laptop is an everyday tool. For others, it is the key to a new job, a course of study or an opportunity to rejoin society.
That realisation brought WSP and Reuzado together. When WSP indicated that it needed laptops for jobseekers, we saw not just a logistical requirement, but above all a social opportunity. Our colleagues set to work with decommissioned equipment that still had plenty of potential. The devices were carefully checked, cleaned, repaired where necessary and fitted with accessories so that they were ready for immediate use.
No devices gathering dust in a corner, but laptops ready for a new lease of life. Jobseekers on a minimum income were then able to purchase these laptops for a nominal fee. This gave them access at home to the resources they needed to apply for jobs, undertake training and actively work on their future.
Sustainability only has meaning if people benefit from it
At Reuzado, we believe that circularity only truly gains value when it also creates a social impact. Reusing a laptop is good for the environment. It extends the lifespan of valuable raw materials, prevents unnecessary emissions and reduces electronic waste. But when that same device simultaneously helps someone find their way back into the labour market, something much greater emerges. That is when sustainability becomes human. And it is no longer just about devices, but about opportunities.
A labour market in which everyone can participate
The Employer Service Point plays a key role in this. By bringing together local authorities, the UWV, employers and jobseekers, the WSP helps to create an inclusive labour market that puts talent first.
That fits perfectly with our vision. Technology should help people move forward – including those for whom access to technology is less straightforward. Every laptop that is repurposed can make a difference. Sometimes small. Sometimes life-changing.
Building tomorrow together
This partnership demonstrates what is possible when organisations look beyond their own fields of expertise. WSP helps people find work. Reuzado gives IT equipment a new lease of life. Together, we create opportunities that go beyond technology alone.
After all, circularity isn’t just about extending the lifespan of hardware. In this sense, it’s also about creating opportunities, and that is perhaps the finest form of sustainability.
