Deleting data or physically destroying it: which should you choose, and when?

15 October 2026

Anyone disposing of end-of-life IT equipment has a choice to make: do you erase the data, or destroy the data storage device? Both methods are secure if carried out correctly, but they are suited to different situations. In this article, we set out the differences so that you know when to choose which method.

What is certified data erasure?

Certified erasure, also known as data deletion, involves overwriting the entire storage capacity of a device using software in accordance with a set standard. The software then verifies that the erasure has been successful and generates a report for each data carrier. The international NIST 800-88 guideline distinguishes between three levels: clear (overwriting), purge (deletion using techniques that cannot be recovered even with laboratory equipment) and destroy (physical destruction).

Reuzado erases data storage media using Blancco, which is recognised worldwide as the standard for secure data erasure. Reuzado is a Blancco ITAD Gold Partner.

Benefits of erasure

  • The device remains intact and can be reused.
  • The residual value is retained and can be set off against the costs.
  • Reuse is the most sustainable choice: there is no need to manufacture a new appliance.
  • You will receive a certificate with a serial number for each data carrier.

Restrictions on erasure

Erasure only works on data storage media that are functioning correctly. A faulty disc, a disc with damaged sectors or a device that no longer boots up cannot be completely overwritten. Your organisation may also have an internal policy stipulating that data storage media must always be destroyed, regardless of the method used.

What is physical destruction?

In physical data destruction, the data carrier is shredded into small particles in an industrial shredder. The DIN 66399 standard specifies, for each type of data carrier and each security level, how small these particles must be. Reuzado destroys hard drives using a DIN 66399 H5 shredder, either in its own secure processing facility or at your premises using the mobile shredder unit.

Benefits of destruction

  • Also works with faulty data storage devices.
  • Maximum security: nothing of any use remains on the data storage device.
  • This can be done on-site, so that the data does not leave the premises.

Disadvantages of destruction

The data storage medium – and with it, its residual value – is lost. Whilst the raw materials are still recycled, the component itself does not get a second life.

When do you choose one or the other?

  • Functioning laptops, desktops and servers that can still be reused: delete.
  • Faulty hard drives and devices that no longer boot up: destroy.
  • Highly sensitive data or an internal obligation to destroy documents: destroy, on site if necessary.
  • A mixed lot: a combination. What can be erased is erased; what cannot be erased is destroyed.

In both cases, you will receive a certificate bearing serial numbers and the date. You can read more about the approach for each situation on our pages about data destruction and destroy hard drives. In the blog Destroyed, removed or simply hidden away? Read on to find out why simply deleting something is never enough.

Frequently asked questions

Which is safer: deleting or destroying?

Both are safe provided they are carried out in accordance with certified procedures. Destruction is necessary in the case of faulty data storage devices or if your organisation requires maximum security. Data erasure is the most sustainable option for functioning equipment.

Can an SSD be wiped, or does it need to be destroyed?

A functioning SSD can be securely erased using software that utilises the SSD’s built-in erasure commands. A faulty SSD is physically destroyed.

Will I also receive a certificate when I delete it?

Yes. With certified data deletion You will receive a certificate with a serial number for each data carrier.
